At VOPFN, our research is driven by a commitment to understanding the realities of one-parent families and shaping policies that support them.

Our work spans several key research areas, each aimed at highlighting challenges, amplifying voices, and driving policy change.

1. Time for a Change (Ongoing Research & Video Series)

Through historical analysis and personal narratives, this project explores how policies affecting one-parent families have evolved and what changes are still needed.
Our "Time for a Change" animation highlights key themes such as economic insecurity, access to childcare, and policy gaps.

2. Economic Stability & Work

We examine how employment policies, social security systems, and workplace protections impact single-parent families. Our research investigates:

  • The effectiveness of welfare policies in providing financial stability.
  • Barriers to employment for one-parent families.
  • The role of flexible work arrangements and childcare support in economic inclusion

.

3. Policy & Advocacy for One-Parent Families

We analyze how laws, social policies, and government programs affect one-parent households through partnerships with NGOs and academic institutions.

This includes:

  • Comparative policy analysis across OECD countries.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of social safety nets.
  • Advocating for gender-sensitive budgeting and inclusive policy frameworks.

4. Historical & Social Perspectives

Many of today’s challenges for single-parent families are rooted in historical narratives and policy legacies. We investigate:

  • The role of social stigma and discrimination in shaping public attitudes.
  • How past welfare policies influenced today’s economic disparities.
  • The long-term impact of historical government interventions on one-parent families

.

Research in Action

Our research doesn’t just sit in academic papers—it’s used to shape real-world policy discussions, inform advocacy efforts, and support NGOs working directly with single-parent families.
